Often comic book
fans find themselves reading comic books published by a particular publishing
company, mainly Marvel Comics and DC Comics, but there are many more publishers
out there. These companies are writing comic books that are knocking readers
socks off! There are too many to list
and give a glimpse of, so over the coming weeks we are going to look at these
not so well-known companies.
The first
publishing company we are going to look at is Valiant. Valiant got its start in
1989 when former Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter and businessman Steven
Massarsky started the premier publishing company. Shooter and Massarsky
originally planned to purchase Marvel, but were outbid. So instead they formed Voyager
Communications, Valiant Comics is an imprint of Voyager. Valiant's first goal was to reach out and recruit Marvel Comics
writers and artists and with the few that they did sway, allowed them to launch an
interconnected line of superhero comics featuring a mixture of characters
licensed from Western Publishing and original creations.
The company was
sold to Acclaim Entertainment in 1994, but unable to make a successful start of
it, they declared bankruptcy in 2004. But, Valiant was just too good and it got
a restart in 2005 by entrepreneurs Dinesh Shamdasani and Jason Kothari.
ValiantEntertainment was back and in 2012, the "Summer of Valiant" had
amazing critical and commercial success with popular comic books, Harbinger,
X-O Manowar, Rai, Shadowman, and major crossover event Unity,
which introduced Eternal Warrior and Archer & Armstrong.
Valiant has
continued to set records and win critical acclaim, including receiving the most
nominations for a single title at both the 2014 and 2016 Harvey Awards. Also
Valiant was responsible for releasing the biggest-selling independent crossover
event of the decade, Unity.
"The Summer
of Valiant" 2013 gave comic book fans two brand new titles Quantum
& Woody and Eternal Warrior, which would change the story
direction of X-O Manowar and Bloodshot, and reveal the origin of
Bloodshot in a special zero issue.
Valiant keeps
getting stronger, adding new on-going titles and focusing on expanding its'
universe of characters beyond its core titles. Valiant launched brand new
characters in titles Britannia and Savage, expanded Divinity in
two sequels Divinity II and Divinity III: Stalinverse and continued
to elevate supporting characters from the Harbinger title in two new
series Generation Zero and the popular Faith.
In 2016, Valiant
was nominated for 50 Harvey Awards, the most nominations for any publisher that
year, including 8 for Bloodshot Reborn. White Dragon Comics is Proud to sell all of Valliant’s great comic
books!
