Lesser Known Comic Book Companies That are Killing it!

Often comic book fans find themselves reading comic books published by a particular publishing company, mainly Marvel Comics and DC Comics, but there are many more publishers out there. These companies are writing comic books that are knocking readers socks off!  There are too many to list and give a glimpse of, so over the coming weeks we are going to look at these not so well-known companies.

The first publishing company we are going to look at is Valiant. Valiant got its start in 1989 when former Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter and businessman Steven Massarsky started the premier publishing company. Shooter and Massarsky originally planned to purchase Marvel, but were outbid. So instead they formed Voyager Communications, Valiant Comics is an imprint of Voyager. Valiant's first goal was to reach out and recruit Marvel Comics writers and artists and with the few that they did sway, allowed them to launch an interconnected line of superhero comics featuring a mixture of characters licensed from Western Publishing and original creations.

The company was sold to Acclaim Entertainment in 1994, but unable to make a successful start of it, they declared bankruptcy in 2004. But, Valiant was just too good and it got a restart in 2005 by entrepreneurs Dinesh Shamdasani and Jason Kothari.

ValiantEntertainment was back and in 2012, the "Summer of Valiant" had amazing critical and commercial success with popular comic books, Harbinger, X-O Manowar, Rai, Shadowman, and major crossover event Unity, which introduced Eternal Warrior and Archer & Armstrong

Valiant has continued to set records and win critical acclaim, including receiving the most nominations for a single title at both the 2014 and 2016 Harvey Awards. Also Valiant was responsible for releasing the biggest-selling independent crossover event of the decade, Unity.

"The Summer of Valiant" 2013 gave comic book fans two brand new titles Quantum & Woody and Eternal Warrior, which would change the story direction of X-O Manowar and Bloodshot, and reveal the origin of Bloodshot in a special zero issue.

Valiant keeps getting stronger, adding new on-going titles and focusing on expanding its' universe of characters beyond its core titles. Valiant launched brand new characters in titles Britannia and Savage, expanded Divinity in two sequels Divinity II and Divinity III: Stalinverse and continued to elevate supporting characters from the Harbinger title in two new series Generation Zero and the popular Faith.

In 2016, Valiant was nominated for 50 Harvey Awards, the most nominations for any publisher that year, including 8 for Bloodshot Reborn. White Dragon Comics is Proud to sell all of Valliant’s great comic books!

Fans can find back issues along with new releases from Valiant Entertainment right here at the #1 online retailer of comic books, White Dragon Comics!

Comic Books You Should be Reading.....Lucifer from Vertigo Comics

Lucifer a new on-going comic book from Vertigo Comics has recently grabbed my attention, along with many comic book fans, as issue one sold out and went to a second printing. With Lucifer’s popularity growing I knew it was time to read this crazy comic book about the devil living in our world. Being a little skeptical, mainly because of the title, I hesitantly opened issue one and got quite a shock, this comic book really looked like it was going to be an interesting story.

It was the artwork that first grabbed my attention, Artist Lee Garbett brings Lucifer Morningstar to life with bold lines, heavy colors and perfect shading. Writer Holly Black’s exceptional depiction of the devil held my interest from beginning to end, reinforcing biblical themes, fire and brimstone, the duality of good and evil, and the fall of an Angel.

Arc one of Lucifer involves murder, an unthinkable murder, God….God has been murdered and Lucifer and angel Gabriel must team-up to find the evil culprit! The Devil and The Angel will take a winding, terrifying path to Hell and back in their search for the murderer. And, when they finally find out the name of that murderer and their reason; total shock and Mayhem!

If you are looking for a unique comic book story, look no further Lucifer has it all adventure, mystery, crime, heroes and villains, and lots more. White Dragon Comics has all the latest issues of Lucifer comic books for sale online.

Fans of Vertigo Comics can find the latest comic book issue of Lucifer right here at White Dragon Comics, the number one online comic store on the net!

Rock Candy Mountain

“In the Big Rock Candy Mountains,
There's a land that's fair and bright,
Where the handouts grow on bushes
And you sleep out every night
Where the boxcars all are empty
And the sun shines every day
On the birds and the bees
And the cigarette trees
The lemonade springs
Where the bluebird sings
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains!”

Rock Candy Mountain, written and drawn by Kyle Starks is one of the new comic books that hit comic book stores shelves this week.

Starks starts the story with, Jackson one of the toughest and roughest Hobo’s to ride the rails. Jackson is in search of the great, magical Rock Candy Mountain. Along his journey he runs into a man who needs a bit of looking after and soon readers are shown why he need’s that looking after! And, as they start their journey, unbeknownst to the pair there is something following them, something or someone that is pure Evil, the Devil!

Kyle Starks (Rick & Morty writer) tells a cool story about the hobo life with some horrific fight scenes, along with the struggles that befall those who choose the Hobo way of life! This is a fun first issue that sets things up well, leaving the reader wanting more!

Rock Candy Mountain is available NOW at White Dragon Comics! Makes sure to stop in and pick up a copy today!

Humor and Kids Comics Make your Child a Better Reader!

Humor comes in different forms, sizes and shapes, but no matter what type of humor you're looking for  experts agree, humor for young readers is the best kind! Starting your child on the road to literacy does not have to be hard and aggravating, all a parent needs to do is make them laugh, that’s right, just make them laugh!

Humor for young readers can be fun, silly and entertaining, but the best part is the fact that once kids start, you can’t get them to stop. Comic books rely heavily on dialogue, which gives children a quick example of how sentence structure, body language and tone can affect a conversation. Comic books are also witty in addition to being funny. A good sign of advanced intelligence is a well developed sense of humor! Introduction to humor early on, with comic books for example, will help influence your child and allow them to flex their own funny bone.

Comic books have always had a stigma attached to them, making parents and teachers leary to purchase them, but teachers soon learned that comic books are a great tool for introducing and keeping a child's imagination engaged. There are literally dozens of titles aimed at young readers that are devoid of the violence, language and themes associated with comics for older readers.

Some of the best titles offered today in comic books are Donald Duck, Adventure Time, Over the Garden Wall, Bravest Warriors, Mickey Mouse, Angry Birds and many, more! White Dragon Comics offers one of the biggest selections of comic books designed for children of all-ages and are available for sale in our store or on our web-site. Take the initiative today and pick up a humorous comic book for your young reader!
